EU Allocates EUR4.8 Million to Farmers Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Fri 23rd May, 2025

The European Union has announced a financial aid package of EUR4.8 million for farmers impacted by the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), particularly benefiting swine producers in Brandenburg, Germany. This assistance comes after the disease made its first appearance in the region in January, causing significant distress among local agricultural communities.

According to the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the funds are aimed at compensating for the economic losses suffered by affected farms. The outbreak, which was confirmed in a herd of water buffalo in Hönow, Märkisch-Oderland district, led to the culling of numerous animals and imposed transport bans as well as trade restrictions on livestock.

As of mid-April, Germany has been declared free from the highly contagious viral disease, which primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals. Despite this positive development, the threat of future outbreaks remains, as evidenced by recent cases reported in neighboring Hungary and Slovakia.

The German Minister of Agriculture emphasized the considerable challenges faced by farmers due to the unprecedented FMD outbreak. He pointed out that vigilance and adherence to existing biosecurity measures are crucial for safeguarding livestock health and preventing further incidents.

In addition to the EUR4.8 million from EU sources, the total financial support for pig farming operations is projected to reach approximately EUR7 million, with Brandenburg contributing around EUR2.8 million. Furthermore, nearly EUR900,000 has been allocated for dairy farming, with about EUR500,000 sourced from EU funds.

The situation highlights the ongoing concerns regarding animal disease management and the need for robust preventive measures in the agricultural sector. Stakeholders are encouraged to remain alert and proactive in implementing safety protocols to protect livestock from potential health threats.
