EnviaM to Invest in Renewable Heating Solutions Amidst Transition Challenges

Thu 8th May, 2025

EnviaM, a prominent energy supplier in Eastern Germany, is set to enhance its renewable energy initiatives by focusing on the heating sector, an area that has lagged behind the transition to greener energy sources. While the company's electricity generation has seen a significant shift towards renewables--now making up over 55% of its output--the share of renewable energy in its heating provision stands at only 19%, indicating substantial room for improvement.

The company aims to green its heating supply by converting at least eight conventional district heating plants to utilize renewable fuels. One notable project includes the transformation of the Vetschau heating plant in South Brandenburg, where wood chips will replace lignite dust as the primary fuel source. This conversion is expected to commence later this year. Additionally, EnviaM is exploring the potential of utilizing waste heat from data centers, such as the facility in Taucha, located in the Nordsachsen district.

Over the next few years, EnviaM plans to invest more than 50 million euros in these green heating initiatives. However, a significant challenge remains: the current cost of green heating from new installations tends to be higher than that derived from traditional oil and gas sources, impacting affordability for consumers.

EnviaM serves approximately 1.1 million customers across parts of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, providing electricity, gas, heating, and high-speed internet services. Despite a reduction in customer numbers from 1.2 million last year, the company reported a revenue decline to 3.09 billion euros from 3.49 billion euros in 2023. Its earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) also dropped to 353.3 million euros from 453.5 million euros the previous year.

In light of these financial challenges, EnviaM's leadership has characterized the past year as a return to normalcy following a previously exceptional year marked by extraordinary one-time effects. While the specifics of future electricity pricing for customers remain uncertain, EnviaM's executives noted that procurement prices have stabilized. They emphasized the importance of monitoring changes in grid fees and levies as critical factors affecting pricing.

In addition to its heating initiatives, EnviaM is committed to further expanding its electricity network, with planned investments of 565 million euros this year, including the construction of new substations. The company has been experiencing a surge in renewable energy capacity, with nearly 1 gigawatt added to its grid in the past year, equivalent to the output of a nuclear power plant. This increase signifies that the region is now generating more electricity from renewable sources than it consumes.

Despite recent reports of lengthy wait times for new solar installations, EnviaM's leadership acknowledged the issues but did not provide specific statistics. They attributed some delays to necessary meter changes and ongoing software challenges.
