Emergency Rescue Vehicle Catches Fire While Responding to Call

Sat 2nd Aug, 2025

A rescue hybrid vehicle belonging to the German Red Cross (DRK) caught fire while rushing to a medical emergency in Lichtenwald, Baden-Württemberg. The incident occurred as the emergency team was responding to a call for assistance, leaving the vehicle a charred wreck.

The DRK paramedic, who was en route to assist a patient, reported that upon arrival, flames erupted from the vehicle's engine compartment. In a swift reaction, he prioritized moving the vehicle away from nearby bushes, homes, and parked cars to prevent further danger.

Despite the smoke filling the interior, the paramedic restarted the engine and maneuvered the vehicle into the street. He then called the fire department for assistance and managed to retrieve critical equipment from the vehicle, including a pediatric emergency kit, an oxygen tank, and a handheld radio. Unfortunately, the fire destroyed not only the vehicle but also personal belongings such as his wallet, sunglasses, and DRK uniforms.

In light of the incident, the local DRK chief indicated that the cause of the fire was likely a technical malfunction. The hybrid vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, had been acquired in 2021 through public donations and was specially equipped as a first responder vehicle.

While the organization seeks funding for a replacement vehicle, it is expected to take several months before enough resources are available. The DRK's first responders play a crucial role in emergency situations, often arriving on the scene before ambulances to provide immediate care. In the Baltmannsweiler area, the average response time for ambulance services is between eight to ten minutes, while it is approximately five minutes in Lichtenwald.

The paramedic's patient received timely care from colleagues who arrived shortly after him and was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he is reported to be recovering well. The incident underscores the vital role of emergency services and the challenges they face in their mission to save lives.
