Elon Musk Claims Recovery of Vine Archive

Tue 5th Aug, 2025

Elon Musk has announced that the long-lost archive of the formerly popular video platform Vine has been rediscovered. In a recent post on X, Musk expressed his intention to restore access to the short videos that once characterized the platform, although he did not provide specific details on how or when this would occur.

Vine, which allowed users to post videos of up to six seconds, was a precursor to many of today's widely-used social media platforms, including TikTok and YouTube Shorts. The service was acquired by Twitter in 2012 for $30 million, capitalizing on the burgeoning trend of short-form video content.

Despite its initial success, Vine struggled to maintain its relevance under Twitter's ownership and was eventually shut down in 2016, just four years after the acquisition. Although users could no longer upload new content, they were still able to access existing videos until the entire archive was removed in subsequent years.

Since Musk's takeover of Twitter, there have been discussions about reviving Vine in some capacity. In a previous poll, a significant majority of users expressed interest in bringing back the platform. Reports indicated that Musk had tasked a team of developers with exploring the possibility of reintroducing Vine.

However, interest in reviving Vine seemed to wane, with Musk shifting his focus to a new project known as Grok Imagine. This initiative is described as a video platform powered by artificial intelligence, which Musk refers to as a "AI-Vine." Grok Imagine is designed to generate short clips and videos based on text commands, and it allows users to upload images that can be animated, currently available to subscribers of X Premium+.
