Surge in Electric Vehicles in EU Market Amid Decline for Tesla and Combustion Engines

Wed 25th Jun, 2025

The European automobile market has witnessed a notable increase in the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) during May, as reported by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA). The market share of battery electric vehicles rose to 15.4%, a significant increase from 12.1% in the same month last year, reflecting a steady shift towards electric mobility.

According to the ACEA, the overall automotive market in the EU experienced a 1.6% year-over-year growth, with 926,582 new registrations in May. This marks the second consecutive month of growth, highlighting a positive trend in the automotive sector.

In May alone, nearly 142,800 battery electric vehicles were registered across the EU, representing a remarkable 25% increase in sales. This trend has been consistent in the first five months of the year, with electric vehicle registrations soaring by over 26% compared to the same period last year.

Despite the growing popularity of electric vehicles, Tesla, a major player in the EV market, faced a dramatic decline. The company experienced a drop of more than 40% in registrations, with only 8,729 units sold. Tesla attributed this downturn partly to the recent launch of a revamped model of its best-selling vehicle, the Model Y. Market analysts suggest that the decline may also be linked to the erratic public behavior of company CEO Elon Musk, which could have impacted consumer confidence.

In the broader context of new vehicle registrations, traditional combustion engines such as gasoline and diesel vehicles have seen a significant slump. Their market share plummeted to 38.1% from 48.5% in the same period last year. Hybrids, on the other hand, continued to grow, capturing a market share of 35.1%, indicating a preference for alternative powertrains among consumers.

The ACEA represents a coalition of 16 major automotive manufacturers, including brands like BMW, Ford, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz. The association's latest report reflects ongoing changes in consumer preferences and the broader transition towards sustainable mobility solutions in Europe.
