Setback for Electric Mobility as Starship Prepares for Next Flight

Mon 26th May, 2025

The German electric mobility sector faces a significant challenge as the primary lobby organization, the Bundesverband Elektromobilität (BEM), has declared bankruptcy. This organization represents around 450 companies, including automotive manufacturers, suppliers, charging station producers, and legal firms. The reasons behind the BEM's insolvency remain unclear, but recent internal disputes and financial management issues could have contributed to this development.

In related news, the aerospace company SpaceX has identified the cause of the recent failure during its eighth Starship test flight. Unlike the previous flight, which was attributed to a fuel leak, this incident was due to an engine failure. SpaceX is scheduled to attempt another test flight of the Starship and its booster rocket this Tuesday, continuing its ambitious plans for space exploration.

Meanwhile, the German military has experienced a positive turnaround regarding the functionality of two reconnaissance satellites. After initial problems with the deployment of antennas, which had become stuck, it was recently confirmed that these antennas can now be successfully extended. This resolution alleviates concerns about the satellites' operational capabilities, as the manufacturer, OHB, had been preparing to provide replacements if the issues persisted.

In a separate legal ruling, the German Federal Court has established that police can unlock mobile phones by forcibly using a suspect's biometric data, specifically a fingerprint, provided that a judicial order is in place. This ruling underscores the balance between law enforcement needs and the protection of personal rights, as authorities seek to access critical evidence while adhering to legal standards.

On a technological note, the rise of automated and autonomous vehicles has seen an increase in the use of Lidar technology. However, this system, which utilizes laser light for 3D environmental mapping, has been reported to inadvertently damage smartphone cameras under certain conditions. This unexpected side effect raises questions about the implications of advanced sensor technologies on consumer electronics.
