El Salvador Proposes Prisoner Exchange with Venezuela

Mon 21st Apr, 2025

In a significant diplomatic move, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has proposed a prisoner exchange with Venezuela, following the recent deportation of alleged gang members from the U.S. to El Salvador. The proposal suggests that the 252 Venezuelan nationals deported from the United States be exchanged for an equal number of political prisoners currently held in Venezuela.

During a recent announcement on the social media platform X, Bukele emphasized that all Venezuelans in custody in El Salvador were apprehended as part of operations targeting criminal gangs like Tren de Aragua, which has been linked to violence and organized crime in the region.

The backdrop of this proposal involves the recent deportation of over 280 migrants from the U.S. to El Salvador. These individuals, accused of being affiliated with notorious gangs such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, have been placed in a high-security prison known for detaining serious offenders. The U.S. government, under former President Donald Trump's administration, had intensified its stance on illegal immigration, with a strict policy leading to these deportations.

President Bukele, who has taken a hardline stance against gang violence in his country, reaffirmed his administration's commitment to collaborating with the U.S. on immigration enforcement during a recent meeting with Trump. This collaboration, however, has drawn criticism from various quarters, including Venezuelan authorities.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has expressed vehement opposition to the deportations, referring to the Venezuelan nationals sent back to El Salvador as having been 'kidnapped.' Maduro's government has threatened to regard these actions as potential crimes against humanity, escalating tensions between the two nations.

Despite ongoing accusations of electoral fraud and authoritarian governance, Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term earlier this year, amidst widespread international criticism and protests from opposition groups. These groups have alleged that the elections were marred by irregularities, leading to violent demonstrations and numerous arrests.

This proposed exchange, if realized, could impact diplomatic relations significantly and potentially alter the political landscape within Venezuela, where the release of political prisoners is a contentious issue.
