Earthquake of Magnitude 5.3 Strikes Near Crete

Tue 3rd Jun, 2025

A significant earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred southeast of the Greek island of Crete during the midday hours. The tremor lasted for several seconds and was felt strongly on the island, according to reports from local news outlets referencing the Geodynamic Institute of Athens. The epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers.

Initial reports from local authorities, including the fire department, indicated that there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage resulting from the quake. Residents experienced a moment of alarm, but there was no widespread panic.

This seismic event follows a separate earthquake earlier in the day near Turkey's western coast, which registered a stronger magnitude of 5.8. That quake was notably deeper, occurring around 60 kilometers below the sea floor. Tragically, it has been reported that a 14-year-old girl died from panic attacks related to that earthquake, and around 69 individuals sustained injuries while attempting to escape from buildings by jumping out of windows amidst the chaos.

The region is known for its seismic activity, and both earthquakes contribute to ongoing concerns about safety in areas prone to natural disasters. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to respond to any developments.
