Dresden - The journey to upgrade the Heinz-Steyer-Stadium in Dresden has been fraught with challenges, leading to a series of setbacks and delays. Most notably, the installation of a much-needed scoreboard has faced multiple failures, but recent developments suggest that the project may finally be moving forward.
The state capital of Saxony has invested approximately 58 million euros in constructing a state-of-the-art athletics arena in the Ostragehege area. However, the project has not gone smoothly; initial planning overlooked essential infrastructure, including internet connectivity, which required costly retrofitting. Furthermore, it was recently discovered that the scoreboard, crucial for the stadium's operations, had not been ordered.
In early June, the first attempt to install the scoreboard was unsuccessful, as adverse weather conditions forced a last-minute cancellation. The local administration acknowledged the oversight regarding the scoreboard, stating that it was not included in the scope of the contract for the stadium's renovation.
The Heinz-Steyer-Stadium serves as the home ground for the DSC football team, the athletics division of DSC, and the Dresden Monarchs football team. Due to the absence of a functional scoreboard, the DSC players have resorted to using a makeshift, hand-painted sign during their home matches.
Today marked a crucial step forward, as efforts to install the scoreboard resumed. The timing is particularly critical, with the Finals event scheduled to take place from July 31 to August 3 along the Elbe River. This event will feature competitions across 20 sports, including athletics, taking place at the Heinz-Steyer-Stadium.
The successful installation of the scoreboard is essential for the upcoming event. After various delays, technicians managed to lift the 250,000 euro LED scoreboard into place around 3 PM, despite previous setbacks when similar attempts were thwarted by severe weather.
The experts are now set to conduct functional tests on the scoreboard before the Finals commence, ensuring that the installation meets operational standards. This development comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the project's completion and the stadium's readiness for hosting significant athletic events.
