Deutsche Bahn to Renovate Alexanderplatz Station, Targeting 'Fear Zones'

Mon 19th May, 2025

The Deutsche Bahn has announced an upcoming renovation project at the Alexanderplatz train station, focusing on enhancing fire safety and improving the overall environment of the station. According to a spokesperson from the railway company, the initiative aims not only to bolster fire prevention measures but also to revitalize the station's lower levels.

One significant aspect of the renovation is the plan to eliminate areas that travelers often find uncomfortable. This proposal has implications for the local homeless population, as certain sections of the station have been labeled as 'fear zones' by visitors. The renovations are part of a broader strategy to make the station more appealing and user-friendly.

The renovations will particularly impact the shopping passage in the basement of the station. The spokesperson noted that parts of this area will be converted into storage facilities for vendors operating within the station, thereby reducing the space available for non-travelers. This aligns with the goals outlined in the project bid, which specifically mentions decreasing waiting areas for individuals who are not passengers, such as the homeless.

In February, the Deutsche Bahn had already indicated that the retail outlets located in the basement would need to close by the end of the year, with a projected completion date for the renovation work set for late 2029. The company has expressed its commitment to ensuring that the station not only meets safety regulations but also creates a welcoming atmosphere for its users.

The upcoming changes at Alexanderplatz are part of a larger initiative that includes similar upgrades at other train stations across Berlin. The overarching goal is to enhance the aesthetic appeal of these transportation hubs while addressing critical safety concerns. By transforming the station into a more inviting space, the Deutsche Bahn hopes to improve the overall experience for travelers and residents alike.
