An Australian man faces the potential death penalty on the Indonesian island of Bali after being caught with over 1.5 kilograms of cocaine. The drugs were discovered last Thursday hidden in the 43-year-old's apartment in the popular tourist area of Canggu, according to local police reports.
Initially reported to have originated from Thailand, it has since been confirmed that the cocaine was actually shipped from the United Kingdom, with an estimated street value of around EUR630,000. During a police press conference, the arrested individual appeared in handcuffs and an orange prison jumpsuit, with his face obscured by a balaclava.
Authorities revealed that the man was awaiting instructions on what to do with the cocaine at the time of his arrest. It is reported that he was to receive approximately EUR2,700 for accepting the package, although he did not personally know those who had contracted him. The police had received a tip-off and tracked the package until its delivery to the Australian.
Indonesia enforces stringent penalties for drug offenses, with the death penalty applicable even for smaller amounts of hard drugs. While many accused individuals typically receive lengthy prison sentences, the severity of the penalties remains a critical aspect of the nation's stance on drug trafficking.
This incident brings back memories of the notorious 'Bali Nine' case from 2005, when a group of Australian drug traffickers was apprehended while attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin from Bali to Australia. Two of their leaders were executed by firing squad in 2015, despite widespread international protests. The remaining members of the group were released only recently after considerable diplomatic efforts by Australian authorities.
The current situation involving the Australian man may once again strain diplomatic relations between Australia and Indonesia, as noted by local news outlets.
