David Beckham Receives Knighthood for Contributions to Sport and Charity

Sat 14th Jun, 2025

David Beckham, a former professional football player renowned for his contributions to English football, has been honored with a knighthood by King Charles III. The announcement was made as part of the annual birthday honors list, where more than 1,000 individuals were recognized for their exceptional service in various fields.

Beckham, who will now be addressed as Sir David, received this prestigious title due to his significant achievements in sports and his charitable efforts. This recognition not only highlights his legendary status within football but also underscores his commitment to philanthropy.

Born and raised in East London, Beckham expressed his surprise and humility at receiving such an honor. He reflected on his humble beginnings and the influence of his parents and grandparents, stating that he never imagined he would be bestowed with a knighthood.

This knighthood is a long-awaited recognition for Beckham, who was previously nominated for this honor a decade ago. However, his name was controversially linked to a tax avoidance scheme during that time, which may have impacted the decision. Since then, he has evolved into an informal ambassador for the King's Trust, a charitable foundation associated with the monarchy.

Beckham is not the only sports figure to be honored this year. The list also includes prominent dart players Luke Littler and Luke Humphries, both of whom received membership in the Order of the British Empire for their outstanding contributions to the sport. Littler, in particular, made headlines last December by becoming the youngest player to win the World Darts Championship just days before his 18th birthday.

Additionally, among the honorees are medical professionals such as Nicholas Hugh, the personal physician to Queen Camilla, and Ranan Dasgupta, the urologist who performed a prostate operation on King Charles a year and a half ago. Both were elevated to the rank of lieutenants of the Victorian Order, a rare honor that only the monarch can bestow, showcasing the breadth of contributions recognized in this year's honors list.

As Beckham takes on this new title, he joins a distinguished group of individuals celebrated for their service to society, further solidifying his legacy both on and off the pitch.
