A devastating wildfire on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus has resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals. Their charred remains were discovered in a vehicle near Limassol, the island's second-largest city, as reported by local authorities.

The fire erupted on Wednesday afternoon in the village of Malia, situated in the mountainous region above Limassol. Strong winds, coupled with an intense heatwave, have exacerbated the situation, with temperatures soaring to a staggering 44 degrees Celsius.

As of Thursday, firefighters have managed to contain the flames, which have already ravaged an area of approximately 100 square kilometers. However, the fire has not been completely extinguished. Emergency services have mobilized over 250 firefighters and deployed 75 firefighting vehicles in their efforts to suppress the blaze.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Cypriot government has sought international assistance. Jordan and Spain have agreed to send firefighting aircraft to aid in the battle against the flames. The Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis, confirmed that Jordan is preparing two aircraft for deployment, while Spain will send an additional two.

Several villages have been evacuated as a precautionary measure, with more than a hundred residents seeking refuge in emergency shelters. Authorities are concerned that numerous homes may have been damaged or destroyed by the fire. Health officials reported that two individuals sustained severe burns and were transported to the hospital, while 16 others received treatment for less serious injuries.

Fire Chief Nikos Logginos indicated that witness testimonies suggest possible arson as the cause of the fire. As a result, he has notified the police to investigate further. The repercussions of the wildfire have also extended to power outages, affecting 16 communities, leaving residents without air conditioning or refrigeration during the extreme heat.

The Cypriot meteorological service has issued warnings regarding the ongoing heatwave, which is impacting much of Southern Europe. The authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during this hazardous weather condition.
