The corruption trial involving former Berlin health senator Dilek Kalayci is approaching its conclusion as the proceedings enter their final stages. Following the prosecution's closing arguments last week, the defense is set to present its case on Friday, with a verdict from the Berlin District Court anticipated later the same day.
The case centers around allegations of bribery linked to Kalayci's wedding in 2019. Prosecutors contend that she engaged in corrupt practices by failing to compensate a marketing agency for planning and organizing her wedding. The agency's director is also implicated, accused of accepting bribes in connection with the event. Both Kalayci and the agency director have denied these allegations.
During the trial, prosecutor Dorian Dorschfeld has called for a sentence of 18 months probation for Kalayci, in addition to a financial penalty of EUR36,000, calculated as 180 daily rates of EUR200. For the agency's director, who is 59 years old, the prosecutor requested a sentence of 15 months probation and a fine of EUR7,500, based on 150 daily rates of EUR50.
The case has attracted significant media attention, raising questions about ethics and accountability in public office. As the trial nears its end, observers are keenly awaiting the court's decision, which could have lasting implications for both defendants.
