Córdoba Cathedral Survives Fire Incident with Minimal Damage

Sun 10th Aug, 2025

A fire that broke out in the iconic Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has been contained with minimal damage reported. The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, was attributed to a malfunction in a cleaning machine located inside the building.

Firefighters responded promptly, and their quick actions prevented a more serious catastrophe. According to the cathedral's dean, Joaquín Alberto Nieva, only a small area of approximately 25 to 50 square meters was affected out of the cathedral's total area of around 23,000 square meters. He assured the public that all necessary repairs would be made.

Witnesses captured dramatic footage of flames erupting from the roof shortly after 9 PM, causing initial panic among onlookers. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control relatively quickly, allowing the cathedral to reopen for regular visitors by Saturday, although a smaller chapel within the structure remained closed for safety.

Nieva emphasized that the cathedral, which receives over two million visitors annually, remains safe for both tourists and worshippers. The site is one of Spain's top tourist attractions, second only to the Basilica of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona.

Officials indicated that the fire's rapid containment was aided by an established fire safety plan, revised in light of the devastating Notre-Dame fire in 2019. The cathedral has also conducted regular fire drills over the years to prepare for such emergencies.

Investigations into the fire's cause are ongoing, with initial reports suggesting that a short circuit in the cleaning machine triggered the flames. Authorities expect to release findings within the coming days.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, originally constructed in the 8th century, is renowned for its stunning Islamic architecture, characterized by its distinctive red-and-white horseshoe arches supported by over 850 columns. Following the Christian reconquest in 1236, it was transformed into a cathedral, leading to a unique blend of Moorish and Christian architectural styles.
