The ongoing coalition negotiations between the Union and the SPD are generating significant debate within both parties. The Junge Union (JU) Brandenburg has expressed particular concern regarding a decision linked to a substantial infrastructure debt package.
Laura Strohschneider, the chairwoman of the JU Brandenburg, conveyed her apprehensions to the media, highlighting that the debt package is difficult for many in the party to accept, especially under the current circumstances. The special fund related to this package is seen as problematic by a considerable number of members within the JU.
As discussions unfold, the Union and SPD are deliberating on the formation of a coalition. Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader and potential future Chancellor, had previously opposed high levels of new debt ahead of the federal elections. However, post-election negotiations led to an agreement among the Union, SPD, and Greens to pursue an unprecedented debt package for defense and infrastructure projects.
Strohschneider remarked that the CDU had strongly emphasized its commitment to avoiding new debts during the election campaign, a promise made to the voters. She noted that some party members now feel misled by this shift in position. Additionally, she pointed out the absence of concrete commitments regarding issues that matter significantly to the younger generation.
Despite these concerns, Strohschneider acknowledged some positive aspects in the coalition's preliminary agreement. She pointed to key CDU positions reflected in the preliminary document, including proposed limits on migration, reductions in electricity taxes, and the reinstatement of refunds for agricultural diesel.
The JU leader also expressed openness to a membership vote regarding the coalition agreement, echoing sentiments from Jan Redmann, the CDU state chairman. The Potsdam-Mittelmark district association has called for such a member survey, warning of potential party exits if members feel unheard.
