Cold and Flu Season Strains Medical Facilities in Berlin and Brandenburg

Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

The onset of the cold and flu season has led to increased patient visits in medical practices across Berlin and Brandenburg. Over the past few weeks, healthcare facilities have observed a steady rise in the number of individuals seeking treatment for respiratory ailments.

According to reports, approximately one-sixth of these patients are suffering from flu-like symptoms, which often include severe manifestations such as fever. The precise number of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 remains difficult to ascertain due to a decrease in testing frequency and consistency.

Recent data from the State Office for Health and Social Affairs indicates a marked increase in the viral load of the coronavirus detected in sewage systems throughout Berlin. Additionally, reported cases of COVID-19 have seen a notable uptick in both Berlin and Brandenburg.

Health experts advise individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms to remain at home for three to five days and limit their interactions with others, regardless of the specific virus involved. Self-testing for COVID-19 can be beneficial in preventing the spread of the virus and may help individuals understand the necessity of avoiding antibiotics, which are ineffective against viral infections.

To bolster their immune systems, healthcare professionals recommend maintaining good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing or disinfection, engaging in outdoor physical activities, ensuring adequate sleep, and adhering to a balanced diet. It is also crucial for those in high-risk groups, particularly individuals over the age of 60, to inquire about booster vaccinations for COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

The flu vaccination campaign is set to kick off in medical practices from October through mid-December. Numerous pharmacies in the region are also offering COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, thereby expanding access to immunizations for those who may find it challenging to secure an appointment with a doctor.

The upcoming 'Long Night of Vaccinations' on October 8 will see healthcare professionals across Germany providing vaccinations against COVID-19 and influenza well into the evening hours.
