Climate Activists Face Charges for Alleged Formation of Criminal Organization

Mon 24th Mar, 2025

In a significant legal development, five members of the climate activist group formerly known as Letzte Generation have been charged in Munich for allegedly forming a criminal organization. This announcement was made by the group itself via social media platform X, revealing that the Munich Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated the charges against them.

The prosecution claims that the accused individuals established a criminal organization named 'Die Letzte Generation', suggesting that their activities were directed towards committing illegal acts. Among those charged is a prominent activist, Carla Hinrichs, who has been a notable figure in the group's previous campaigns.

The term 'criminal organization' is defined in the German Penal Code as a union whose purpose or activity is aimed at the commission of crimes. The group characterized the charges as a direct attack on civic engagement, which they regard as a cornerstone of democracy.

Originally founded following a climate hunger strike in Berlin, Letzte Generation gained national attention in 2022 through a series of disruptive protest actions aimed at raising awareness about climate change. In early 2024, the group announced a strategic shift, signaling a transformation in its focus and later rebranding itself as Neue Generation.

Raphael Thelen, a member of the newly named group, disclosed to media outlets that the organization would expand its advocacy beyond climate issues to encompass broader democratic principles. Additionally, there are plans to establish a separate faction called the Widerstands-Kollektiv, aimed at mobilizing efforts for civil resistance.

This latest legal action against climate activists raises questions about the limits of protest and the definition of civic engagement in the context of environmental advocacy. As the situation continues to unfold, the response from both the public and the legal community will be closely monitored.
