In a recent development, internal disagreements have surfaced within the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) regarding the sanctions imposed on Russia. The call for a discussion on the potential easing of these sanctions was initiated by Michael Kretschmer, the Minister-President of Saxony and a member of the CDU. However, this proposal has been met with significant resistance from senior foreign policy figures within the party.
Johann Wadephul, the deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group responsible for foreign affairs, emphasized that the sanctions regime was established in coordination with European partners and any modifications must occur within that framework. Wadephul firmly stated that unilateral actions by Germany are unacceptable, highlighting the necessity of a reliable peace process between Russia and Ukraine as a prerequisite for any consideration of easing sanctions.
Kretschmer expressed his concerns in a recent interview, arguing that the current stance on sanctions is outdated, particularly in light of ongoing actions by the United States. He suggested that if Germany's approach is weakening its own position more than that of Russia, it warrants reevaluation.
Additionally, Jürgen Hardt, another CDU foreign policy spokesperson and an ally of Kretschmer, pointed out that the Kremlin regularly raises the issue of sanctions because they are effective. He noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is struggling to conceal the detrimental impacts of the war economy, characterized by high inflation and declining living standards, from the Russian populace. Hardt asserted that the only viable solution for Putin is to end the war, which is exactly what the sanctions aim to achieve.
In response to Kretschmer's remarks, Britta Haßelmann, one of the co-chairs of the Green parliamentary group, labeled him as overly sympathetic towards Putin. She urged Friedrich Merz, the CDU chairman, to distance the party from what she referred to as the 'Moscow connection' and to take a definitive stance on the matter.
This ongoing debate within the CDU highlights the complexities of foreign policy decision-making in relation to Russia, especially as tensions remain high due to the conflict in Ukraine. The discussions reflect a broader concern about the balance between national interests and international solidarity in the face of aggression.
