Rodrigo Duterte Faces International Criminal Court for Human Rights Violations
Section: News
The former president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, is set to make his first appearance at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague today. The court has scheduled the hearing for 14:00 Central European Time, following Duterte's arrest on Tuesday under an international warrant issued by the ICC. He was apprehended at the airport in Manila and subsequently transferred to the court on Wednesday.
Duterte is facing charges related to crimes against humanity, stemming from his administration's aggressive anti-drug campaign from 2016 to 2022. He is accused of being involved in at least 43 murders during this time, which took place amid a crackdown on drug-related crime.
The ICC has indicated that this initial hearing will focus on confirming the identity of the accused and ensuring that he understands the proceedings. Duterte will also be informed of the allegations against him and his legal rights. The proceedings, which are expected to be streamed online, have been slightly delayed.
During Duterte's presidency, the government claimed that approximately 6,000 individuals were killed in connection with the anti-drug operations. However, human rights organizations estimate that the actual number of victims could be as high as 30,000. Reports indicate that many suspects were executed without trial, raising serious concerns about violations of human rights.
The chief prosecutor of the ICC, Karim Khan, has stated that these alleged crimes form part of a widespread and systematic assault on civilians. Investigations into the matter have been ongoing since 2018, and Khan has indicated that they are not yet complete.
Upon arriving in The Hague, Duterte underwent a medical examination, which reportedly confirmed that he is in good health. The case against him has drawn significant international attention, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding human rights practices in the Philippines.
