Strategic Ambitions of the AfD in Baden-Württemberg: Frohnmaier Eyes Minister Presidency

Wed 2nd Apr, 2025

Markus Frohnmaier, a prominent member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and a close ally of party leader Alice Weidel, is reportedly positioning himself to become the next Minister President of Baden-Württemberg. At 34 years old, Frohnmaier has been associated with Weidel since his twenties, initially serving as her press spokesperson.

Currently serving as a Bundestag representative and the regional leader of the AfD in Baden-Württemberg, Frohnmaier's aspirations extend beyond his current roles. According to sources within the party, he aims to implement a rigorous three-step strategy to elevate his political profile and secure the Minister President position.

The first step involves Frohnmaier seeking to become the AfD's foreign policy spokesperson, which would require ousting Matthias Moosdorf, the current officeholder. Moosdorf's approach, perceived as inadequate by some in the party, has prompted calls for a shift towards a more pro-American foreign policy, aligning with the preferences of Weidel, who has expressed admiration for figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Frohnmaier's second objective is to redefine the AfD's foreign policy stance to emphasize stronger ties with the United States. His past experiences, including a controversial visit to Crimea in 2018, where he was hosted by Russian authorities, have shaped his views and connections within international political circles.

Ultimately, Frohnmaier's plan aims to defeat Cem Özdemir, the Green Party candidate, in the upcoming regional elections in March and to become the first AfD Minister President in the history of Baden-Württemberg. The support within the party for Frohnmaier is substantial, with various leaders expressing their endorsement for his potential candidacy.

Marc Bernhard, the AfD's group leader in Baden-Württemberg, stated that Frohnmaier is an excellent choice for the Minister President candidate and will be proposed during the party congress. Similarly, party members such as Martin Hess have voiced their support, highlighting Frohnmaier's suitability for the role.

Emil Sänze, co-chair of the AfD in the region, also expressed his willingness to back Frohnmaier's candidacy, emphasizing that his leadership would benefit the party significantly. In response to these developments, Frohnmaier has noted his readiness to serve wherever the party requires him, reflecting the ambition and commitment expected from a politician of his stature.
