CDU Deputy Critiques Communication Regarding Coalition Agreement

Fri 11th Apr, 2025

The coalition agreement between the CDU and SPD has been acknowledged by Frank Bommert, the deputy chair of the Brandenburg CDU, as containing several promising initiatives. However, he has raised concerns regarding the party's internal communication during the coalition formation process.

Bommert expressed that the communication strategy within the CDU has not been optimal, indicating that party members often received updates through the media rather than directly from leadership. He noted that this situation was particularly challenging for CDU members, who felt out of the loop compared to members of other parties who appeared to have more immediate access to information.

Highlighting the difference in approach, Bommert lamented the absence of a member vote on the coalition agreement, unlike the process undertaken by the SPD. He emphasized the importance of involving the party base in such significant decisions, stating that it was unfortunate that the members could not cast their votes on the agreement. Instead, the decision will be made by a smaller party assembly, as stipulated by the party's regulations.

Despite these concerns, Bommert offered a generally favorable assessment of the coalition agreement itself. He pointed out several key measures that he believes will benefit both businesses and employees. Among these measures, he mentioned the introduction of tax-free overtime, which he argued would be advantageous for companies and staff alike. Additionally, he highlighted proposed reductions in electricity taxes, a reformation of the citizen's income into a new basic security system, and the cessation of the expedited naturalization process as noteworthy components of the agreement. He also noted the elimination of the German supply chain law as significant for certain companies.

As the coalition negotiations progress, the CDU faces the challenge of enhancing internal communication to ensure that all members are adequately informed and engaged. Bommert's remarks underscore the need for the party to foster a more inclusive decision-making environment, particularly as they navigate the complexities of governing in coalition with the SPD.
