Fri 11th Jul, 2025

A 26-year-old German backpacker, Carolina Wilga, has been located alive after being missing for twelve days in the Australian Outback. According to local authorities, she was discovered injured and suffering from numerous insect bites on a remote bush path.

Wilga was found by a passerby on Friday afternoon, just as search efforts were being called off due to the approaching darkness. The exact details of her ordeal remain unclear, but reports indicate she had to endure extreme conditions while navigating the wilderness. She is currently being transported to Perth for medical treatment.

Local police have confirmed that Wilga sustained injuries during her time in the Outback, and her condition has been described as fragile. Inspections reveal she faced challenging weather, including nighttime temperatures dropping to near freezing and periods of rain, complicating her survival efforts.

Martin Glynn, the incident commander, noted the remarkable bravery she displayed during her ordeal, stating that her experiences will likely be significant once she is able to share them. The search for Wilga intensified after her vehicle was discovered abandoned at Karroun Hill, approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Perth, suggesting it had suffered mechanical issues.

The police surmised that she likely left her vehicle in search of help and became disoriented in the vast and rugged terrain of the Outback, which is known for its harsh conditions and sparse population. The area surrounding her vehicle is predominantly uninhabited, with the nearest substantial path being roughly 35 kilometers away.

The Premier of Western Australia, Roger Cook, expressed immense relief upon hearing of Wilga's safe return, calling it an incredible outcome after such a lengthy search. The local community has been praised for their support and efforts during the search operation.

As investigations continue, authorities remain focused on ensuring Wilga receives the necessary medical care and support during her recovery process.
