Fri 29th Aug, 2025

A serious incident occurred in the Upper Palatinate region when a bus carrying approximately 30 passengers lost control at an autobahn exit, crashing through a sound barrier wall. The accident took place on the A93 near Weiden.

According to police reports, three individuals sustained serious injuries, although their lives are not considered to be in danger. The remaining passengers experienced mostly minor injuries, which included bruises and shock from the incident.

The bus was engaged in a rail replacement service from Regensburg and was navigating a curve at the time of the accident. The 67-year-old driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to exit the highway. It is believed that the bus began to skid after the driver attempted to countersteer, resulting in a collision with a guardrail and subsequently breaching the sound barrier.

The bus finally came to a stop in a steep embankment behind the sound wall, becoming lodged in thick underbrush. Firefighters worked quickly to secure the vehicle to prevent further sliding down the slope. Passengers were able to exit the bus safely afterward.

Rescue teams were deployed to the scene, including a helicopter from the air rescue service. The trapped driver was extricated by firefighters and transported along with the two seriously injured passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The autobahn exit and the A93 heading north were closed to facilitate the recovery of the bus, with authorities estimating that the road would not be reopened until late afternoon.
