Zelenskiy Optimistic About Repairing U.S. Relations

LONDON - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed optimism on Sunday regarding the potential to mend relations with the United States following a contentious meeting with President Donald Trump. He indicated that ongoing discussions behind closed doors would be crucial for improving ties.

During a recent press briefing at a London airport after a summit with European leaders, Zelenskiy reinforced Ukraine's stance on territorial integrity, stating firmly that no land would be surrendered to Russia as part of any peace agreement. He also mentioned ongoing discussions about a minerals deal with the U.S., which could be vital for Ukraine's economic recovery.

The backdrop to Zelenskiy's comments included a dramatic meeting in the Oval Office on Friday, where Trump accused him of ingratitude for U.S. support and highlighted concerns about respect for American assistance. This meeting raised doubts about the continuity of U.S. support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Zelenskiy, who arrived in London visibly shaken by the events in Washington, was met with a warm welcome from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and supporters. At the summit, European leaders agreed to draft a peace proposal for submission to the U.S., aiming to secure the assurances needed by Kyiv to dissuade further Russian aggression.

Stressing the importance of U.S. military backing, Zelenskiy stated that any cessation of weapon supplies would only benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin. He remained confident that the U.S. would continue its support, citing the moral obligation of leading nations to oppose Russian expansionism.

Even amidst the turbulence of his recent meetings, Zelenskiy maintained that he viewed the relationship with the U.S. as salvageable. He expressed a belief that open discussions should not be conducted in such a public manner, which he felt had not helped the partnership.

The abrupt end to Zelenskiy's visit to Washington meant that a significant minerals agreement, which is expected to bolster Ukraine's economy and provide Trump with a narrative about Ukraine's repayment of U.S. aid, was not finalized. However, Zelenskiy reiterated Ukraine's willingness to proceed with the deal, which is critical given Ukraine's abundant resources of lithium and rare earth minerals.

Addressing concerns over a potential ceasefire, Zelenskiy made it clear that Ukraine would not accept any arrangement that involved relinquishing control over territories currently under occupation. He stated unequivocally that Ukraine would not recognize any land currently held by Russia as Russian territory.

While discussions between Kyiv and Washington have reportedly continued since Friday's meeting, Zelenskiy downplayed any personal impact, asserting that his position was secure. He dismissed rumors of potential resignation, emphasizing that any change in leadership would require more than just electoral processes.

Despite challenges, Zelenskiy reiterated his commitment to achieving NATO membership, describing it as a fulfillment of his mission and a crucial step for Ukraine's security.
