Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Xavier Worthy Released After Domestic Violence Charges Dropped
AUSTIN, Texas -- Xavier Worthy, a wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been released following the decision by the Williamson County District Attorney's office in Texas not to pursue charges against him. The decision came after Worthy was arrested on allegations of felony domestic violence, specifically for assaulting a family or household member.
District Attorney Shawn Dick confirmed to local media that his office had conducted interviews with witnesses but decided not to proceed with the case at this time. Worthy, who was taken into custody on Friday, was held at the county jail under allegations involving choking, a serious charge under Texas law.
In a statement from Worthy's legal representation, his attorneys emphasized his innocence, asserting that the accusations stemmed from conflicts with a female resident of his home. They claimed that this individual had been asked to leave multiple times due to issues related to infidelity and had subsequently made attempts to extort Worthy.
According to the attorneys, the complainant had not only refused to vacate the property but also caused damage within the residence during the disputes. They reported that there is photographic evidence supporting their claims of physical altercations, including scratches on Worthy's face and hair being pulled out.
The Chiefs organization acknowledged awareness of the situation and stated they are in the process of gathering more information regarding the incident.
Xavier Worthy was selected by the Chiefs in the first round of the previous NFL Draft, becoming the 28th overall pick. He made an impressive start to his professional career, scoring two touchdowns in his debut and later becoming a key player for the team as they sought a third consecutive Super Bowl title. In the last season, he recorded 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns, also contributing with three rushing touchdowns.
Worthy's performance was particularly notable during the Chiefs' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, where he recorded eight receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs have been relying on Worthy, especially following a season-ending injury to fellow wide receiver Rashee Rice, who had been a standout in his rookie season before facing legal troubles of his own stemming from a serious car accident.
This incident has raised concerns within the organization and among fans, as the Chiefs navigate the complexities of player conduct both on and off the field.
