Tropical Storm Chantal Intensifies as It Approaches South Carolina

Sun 6th Jul, 2025

As Tropical Storm Chantal makes its way towards the southeastern coast of the United States, it has gained strength, prompting significant concerns for the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued tropical storm warnings for affected areas, indicating the storm's potential impact.

Currently, Chantal is located approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) east of Charleston, South Carolina, and around 85 miles (136 kilometers) southwest of Wilmington, North Carolina. The storm is maintaining maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (96 kph) and is progressing northward at a speed of 8 mph (13 kph).

Rain bands from Chantal have begun to reach land, raising alarms about the possibility of flash flooding in the region. The storm is anticipated to make landfall in South Carolina within the next few hours and is expected to weaken rapidly after moving inland.

Heavy rainfall is projected for parts of North Carolina through Monday, with expected accumulations between 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters). Certain localized areas could experience rainfall totals of up to 6 inches (15 centimeters), further increasing the risk of flash flooding.

In preparation for the storm, South Carolina's Emergency Management division has alerted residents to the potential for isolated tornadoes along the coast, as well as minor coastal flooding risks. Authorities have advised drivers to avoid water-covered roads and to heed road-closure signs in flooded areas.
