In a devastating incident in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, a hot-air balloon caught fire and plummeted to the ground on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, according to local firefighting authorities. Eyewitness footage from the scene revealed thick smoke billowing from the balloon as it descended uncontrollably towards the ground in the Praia Grande municipality.

Reports indicate that the balloon was carrying a total of 21 people, including the pilot, when the fire erupted around 8 a.m. local time. It is believed that a blaze ignited in the balloon's basket, leading the pilot to attempt an emergency landing. Thirteen passengers, including the pilot, successfully escaped by jumping out, but tragically, eight others were unable to evacuate in time.

As the balloon shed weight from the escaping passengers, it unexpectedly ascended again, complicating the situation further. Eyewitness accounts describe harrowing moments where some victims were seen falling through the air as the fire engulfed the aircraft.

Among the deceased, it has been reported that four individuals were found badly burned, while others perished in the chaos of the descent. The loss has deeply affected the local community, with officials expressing their sorrow over the tragedy. The chief of the civil police in Santa Catarina noted the heartbreaking nature of the event, stating that some of the victims were found embracing in their final moments.

Governor Jorginho Mello conveyed his condolences and acknowledged the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also extended his support to the families of the victims, pledging that the federal government would assist local authorities in their response efforts.

In light of the tragedy, authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with findings expected to be released within 30 days. The pilot has provided a statement to investigators, and interviews with survivors are ongoing as part of the inquiry process.

According to reports, the hot-air balloon was expected to have a flight duration of approximately 45 minutes, reaching altitudes of up to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). The cost for a passenger ticket was around 550 reais (approximately $100). The company responsible for the balloon, Sobrevoar, stated that it had complied with all safety regulations and maintained a clean record prior to this incident. In response to the tragedy, the company has decided to suspend all operations indefinitely.

Hot-air ballooning is a popular activity in certain regions of southern Brazil, particularly in areas known for their stunning canyon landscapes, often referred to as the 'Brazilian Cappadocia' due to its resemblance to the famous hot-air ballooning site in Turkey. Just a week prior, another hot-air balloon incident occurred in São Paulo state, resulting in the death of a young woman and injuries to eleven others.
