Concerns Rise as TeleMessage, Used by Trump Adviser, Faces Security Breach
Recent reports indicate that TeleMessage, an application similar to Signal and reportedly utilized by Mike Waltz, a former National Security Adviser under Donald Trump, has experienced a security breach. This revelation has intensified scrutiny over the security of communications among U.S. officials.
According to the tech platform 404 Media, a hacker successfully exploited a vulnerability within TeleMessage's backend infrastructure, allowing them to intercept messages from several users of the application. While 404 Media did verify some of the materials provided by the hacker, it was noted that there were no intercepted messages from Waltz or other members of the Trump administration.
Waltz's use of TeleMessage came under scrutiny following a scandal in which he allegedly set up a Signal group for real-time updates regarding U.S. military operations in Yemen. The situation escalated when a prominent journalist was inadvertently added to this group, raising alarms about the confidentiality of sensitive discussions.
Waltz was removed from his position just days after the scandal erupted, further complicating the narrative surrounding his communications practices. The unauthorized version of Signal, known for its end-to-end encryption, was intended to provide secure messaging for its users; however, the use of TeleMessage, which is in the process of being rebranded as Capture Mobile by its parent company Smarsh, has raised significant concerns regarding its security framework.
While Signal's technology aims to protect against surveillance, the additional features offered by TeleMessage for message retention can introduce vulnerabilities if not implemented correctly. A representative from Signal previously indicated that they cannot assure the security of unofficial Signal variants.
The security breach underscores the critical need for secure communication channels among government officials, as breaches can lead to significant risks, especially in high-stakes environments involving national security.
