Taiwan Representative at Papal Funeral Seeks Diplomatic Engagement

TAIPEI - Taiwan's representative attending the funeral of Pope Francis is looking to leverage the occasion to engage with international leaders sympathetic to Taiwan's cause, with the goal of strengthening the island's diplomatic relationships amidst its ongoing isolation.

Despite President Lai Ching-te's absence from the funeral, former Vice President Chen Chien-jen, a devout Catholic with prior experience at the Vatican, will represent Taiwan. His attendance coincides with notable figures such as U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

In remarks shared with Taiwan's Central News Agency and Public Television Service, Chen expressed his intention to foster positive interactions with leaders from like-minded nations present at the funeral. He emphasized the importance of even brief conversations as opportunities to enhance friendly relations.

Accompanying Chen is Vice Foreign Minister Francois Wu, a prominent figure in Taiwan's diplomatic circles, known for his extensive media engagements and previous role as the de facto ambassador to France.

China, which does not maintain diplomatic ties with the Vatican, has yet to announce its representative for the funeral, although its foreign ministry has extended condolences following the pope's passing. Taiwan remains vigilant regarding the Vatican's attempts to strengthen ties with China, particularly following the recent extension of an agreement concerning the appointment of bishops in China.

Chen, a former premier of Taiwan, expressed optimism that future papal leadership would continue to support Taiwan's collaboration with the Vatican, aiming for comprehensive development and the promotion of regional peace and global stability.

The ongoing diplomatic struggle faced by Taiwan is underscored by China's stance, which regards Taiwan as a province lacking any right to international statehood. This position is vigorously contested by the Taiwanese government, which seeks to maintain and enhance its global presence.
