Tragic Submarine Incident Claims Lives of Tourists in Red Sea
CAIRO - A recreational submarine carrying a group of 45 tourists sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, during a coral reef tour in the Red Sea, resulting in the tragic loss of six Russian individuals, as confirmed by local authorities. The incident occurred approximately 1,000 meters from shore, leading to a swift response from rescue teams.
The provincial governor, Maj. Gen. Amr Hanafi, reported that among the rescued individuals, over two dozen sustained injuries and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, all passengers aboard the vessel have been accounted for, with no one remaining unaccounted.
The cause of the submarine's sinking is currently under investigation. The vessel, known as 'Sindbad,' typically operates tours that last around 40 minutes, providing passengers with the opportunity to view marine life through panoramic windows while submerged at depths of 20 to 25 meters (65 to 80 feet).
Despite initial reports suggesting that all tourists were Russian nationals, the governor indicated that the group included individuals from India, Norway, and Sweden. Russia's Tass news agency reported that among the deceased were at least two children, according to statements from the Russian consulate in Hurghada.
Footage released by the governor's office depicted him visiting survivors in the hospital, where he met with two Egyptian crew members and several tourists. While some appeared to be recovering, one Indian parent expressed concern for their daughter, who remains in critical condition.
Tourism is a vital sector for Egypt's economy, particularly in regions known for their stunning coral reefs. However, safety concerns have arisen following previous incidents, such as a tourist yacht sinking in the Red Sea last November, which resulted in multiple drownings. The government has faced challenges in ensuring the safety of tourists, especially in light of regional conflicts that have caused some travel companies to suspend or limit operations.
This tragic event highlights the inherent risks associated with underwater tourism and the need for stringent safety measures to protect visitors exploring the natural wonders of the Red Sea.
