Severe Heat Wave Affects the Pacific Northwest and Southwestern U.S.

Mon 25th Aug, 2025

Residents across the Western United States experienced a severe heat wave this past weekend, leading to hospitalizations due to dangerously high temperatures. Forecasts indicated that areas including Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona would face intense heat throughout the weekend.

Approximately 1.2 million individuals were under extreme heat alerts, with no expected overnight relief from the high temperatures. The Tucson area in Arizona was particularly affected, with the National Weather Service predicting temperatures to soar between 102°F and 107°F (39°C to 42°C). Inland regions of Southern California also faced significant heat risk.

Additionally, around 18.6 million people nationwide were under major heat advisories, impacting outdoor workers and those lacking access to proper cooling and hydration facilities, including individuals in Miami. In Portland, Oregon, a record temperature of 102°F (38.9°C) was reported on August 22, potentially breaking the previous record of 98°F (36.7°C) set in 1942. This extreme heat significantly impacted participants in the city's annual Hood to Coast relay race, prompting emergency responses as runners struggled to cope with the conditions.

During the race, at least one participant, a long-distance runner aged over 50, lost consciousness after running several miles. The individual was attended to by fellow runners who ensured he received medical attention promptly. Reports indicated that emergency room visits and 911 calls surged as the heat wave intensified, reflecting the serious health risks posed by the extreme temperatures.

Health officials noted a sharp increase in emergency visits, particularly among participants of the race, highlighting the dangers associated with high temperatures. Historical data shows that in June 2021, Portland recorded a staggering high of 116°F (46°C) during a similar heat wave, which resulted in over 100 fatalities, predominantly among vulnerable populations, including those aged 60 and older.

As the current heat wave continues, health authorities are urging residents to take precautions, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours. The ongoing situation underscores the growing concern regarding extreme weather events and their impact on public health.
