Mavericks Fall Short Against Clippers in Overtime Thriller

Sat 15th Nov, 2025

The Dallas Mavericks faced the Los Angeles Clippers in a closely contested matchup on Friday night, ultimately succumbing to a 133-127 defeat in their second NBA Cup game of the season. This loss marks another setback for the Mavericks in their quest for success in the Cup.

During the game, several players had standout moments, despite the overall disappointing result. One player who struggled was Williams, who had difficulty with his shooting performance. His playing time was significantly reduced as D'Angelo Russell found his rhythm after a challenging start to the season. Although Williams made several noteworthy plays, including a dramatic save that involved diving into the scorer's table, his shooting woes limited his impact.

Christie, another key player for the Mavericks, also faced challenges in his shooting game. While he managed to connect on a few three-point attempts, he was not at his usual performance level, particularly on a night when teammate Klay Thompson began the game strongly. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, both players being in top form would have significantly improved their chances.

Devin Harris, commenting during the broadcast, described Flagg's performance as "quiet." While he shot decently outside the arc, he lacked opportunities to contribute more significantly to the game, resulting in minimal impact on the overall score. However, Flagg did manage to make crucial shots as the game progressed, showcasing his potential for growth.

Marshall stepped up admirably in the absence of P.J. Washington. He delivered a solid performance, particularly from long range, and capitalized on opportunities to earn free throws. His scoring ability kept the Mavericks competitive for a significant portion of the game, even leading the team in points for a stretch until Russell's late-game surge.

Gafford encountered difficulties early on, finding himself in foul trouble that limited his playing time. With Derek Lively returning from injury and on minutes restriction, Gafford's early fouls hampered the Mavericks' game plan. Despite these challenges, Gafford managed to make the most of his limited opportunities, including a remarkable block that helped stabilize the game momentarily for Dallas.

Russell had a breakout performance, efficiently scoring and contributing with rebounds and assists throughout the game. His offensive control and poise were evident, especially as he led the Mavericks back into contention during critical moments. Although he missed a potential game-winning shot, his overall performance was a significant factor in keeping the Mavericks competitive.

Thompson also had a resurgence, appearing more like his former self as he found his shooting touch. While his accuracy wavered as the game progressed, his initial contributions were crucial for the Mavericks. The team initially struggled, allowing the Clippers to gain an early lead, but a strong collective effort from Russell and Thompson helped Dallas recover temporarily.

One concerning trend for the Mavericks has been their defensive struggles, as they allowed 60 or more points in the first half for the fifth time this season. This pattern of defensive lapses has proven costly, particularly when combined with a lack of strong starts, forcing the Mavericks to play catch-up throughout games.

The second half of the game mirrored the first, with Dallas displaying flashes of brilliance but ultimately lacking consistency. After falling behind by double digits in the third quarter, the Mavericks made a late push, closing the gap and forcing overtime. However, fatigue set in during the second overtime period, leading to their defeat.

Facing a Clippers team that was on a six-game losing streak presented an opportunity for the Mavericks to secure a much-needed victory. However, they were unable to capitalize on this chance, ending the game on a disappointing note. Moving forward, the Mavericks will need to focus on improving their defensive strategies and establishing stronger starts to avoid similar pitfalls in future matchups.
