LeBron James Eyes Return as Lakers Seek Road Trip Success

Sat 15th Nov, 2025

LeBron James is reportedly making significant strides in his recovery from an injury that has kept him sidelined for the entirety of the season. As the Los Angeles Lakers navigate a challenging five-game road trip, James' potential return is seen as a positive development for the team.

This week, James has been diligently working in Los Angeles to overcome sciatica affecting his right side. Lakers head coach JJ Redick noted that prior to the team's 118-104 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans, James participated in an individual workout and joined in five-on-five practices with the South Bay Lakers. The Lakers are set to conclude their road trip against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night, after which James is expected to practice with the team on Monday. If everything goes smoothly, he may make his long-awaited season debut on Tuesday against the Utah Jazz at Crypto.com Arena.

The Lakers have faced challenges during their road trip, particularly struggling with shooting against some of the league's toughest defenses, including a significant loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. As James prepares to make his return, there are questions about how his integration will affect the current team dynamics, especially given the chemistry that has developed between players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

Redick emphasized the importance of assessing the team's situation next week, noting that with fewer games, there will be more time to strategize and evaluate their performance. He highlighted the unique rhythm of the NBA season, where preparation and review often extend late into the night as teams prepare for back-to-back games.

Last season, James delivered impressive statistics, averaging 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, with shooting percentages of 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from beyond the arc. Teammate Jarred Vanderbilt expressed confidence in James' ability to enhance the team's performance upon his return, acknowledging the potential challenges of re-integrating a star player midseason.

In the recent matchup against the Pelicans, Austin Reaves stepped up, contributing 31 points and seven assists, which helped the Lakers improve their record to 2-2 on the current road trip. Reaves noted that the team's effort and attention to detail were key factors in their success, emphasizing the importance of executing their game plan effectively.

Rui Hachimura has drawn comparisons to basketball legend Michael Jordan, at least in terms of his scoring abilities, while Doncic's performance, recording 24 points, 12 assists, and six rebounds, was pivotal in securing victory. His first-half statistics were particularly notable, achieving at least 20 points and nine assists, a feat not seen among Lakers players since the 1996-97 season.

Deandre Ayton also made a significant impact for the Lakers, contributing 20 points and 16 rebounds. Despite the Pelicans' Trey Murphy III leading his team with 35 points, Ayton remained focused on the Lakers' need for a win against the Bucks to finish the road trip on a high note.

Ayton stated that finishing the trip with strong performances in the upcoming games is crucial, aiming to overcome the earlier losses faced in Atlanta and Oklahoma City. The Lakers also activated rookie Adou Thiero, who has been recovering from knee surgery, though he did not play against the Pelicans. Redick indicated that he hopes to provide Thiero with some playing time in the next game against Milwaukee.
