Tensions Rise as Israel Targets Syrian Bases of Interest to Turkey

AMMAN/ISTANBUL - Recent airstrikes by Israel on Syrian military installations have heightened tensions between Turkey and Israel, as sources reveal that Turkey had been assessing these bases for potential military deployment. The strikes, which occurred this week, are viewed as a significant escalation amid ongoing political shifts in Syria following the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.

According to multiple sources, Turkey had identified at least three air bases in Syria for a possible joint defense initiative, which could involve establishing Turkish military presence in the region. Despite Ankara's assurances to the United States about its intentions not to threaten Israel, the Israeli attacks on these sites signal a growing concern over Turkey's expanding influence in Syria.

The recent developments come in the context of a new Islamist government that has emerged in Syria after the fall of Assad in December. Israel, wary of an Islamist regime at its borders, has urged the U.S. to limit Turkey's role in the region.

Turkish military teams had reportedly evaluated facilities at the T4 and Palmyra air bases in Homs province, as well as the main airport in Hama province, assessing their readiness for potential military operations. However, a planned visit to these bases was canceled shortly before the Israeli airstrikes, which resulted in extensive damage, particularly at the T4 site. Reports indicate that the airstrikes rendered the runway and other critical infrastructure unusable, underscoring Israel's determination to prevent an expanded Turkish military footprint.

In response to the airstrikes, Turkey's foreign ministry condemned Israel, labeling it as a significant threat to regional stability. Despite the rhetoric, Turkish officials have sought to clarify their position, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan asserting that Turkey does not desire conflict with Israel in Syria.

Since the regime change in Syria, Israel has increased its military activities in the region, taking control of strategic areas and targeting Syrian military assets. The recent airstrikes were among the most substantial to date, with reports of multiple locations being struck within a short timeframe, resulting in significant casualties among both military personnel and civilians.

Israeli officials have characterized these military actions as essential for maintaining the security of Israel, while also expressing concerns that Turkey may deploy advanced military technology that could threaten Israeli air superiority in the area.

Turkey, for its part, has attempted to assure both the U.S. and regional stakeholders that its military plans in Syria are not intended to provoke Israel. Turkish officials have emphasized the potential fallout of a destabilized Syria, suggesting that Turkey would bear the brunt of any negative consequences, including increased refugee flows and security challenges.

As the geopolitical landscape in Syria continues to evolve, analysts warn of an ideological clash between Turkey and Israel, although diplomatic engagements may provide avenues to mitigate risks of military escalation.
