Iran Dismisses Ceasefire Talks Amid Ongoing Israeli Assault

Mon 16th Jun, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions, Iran has communicated to mediators from Qatar and Oman that it will not consider ceasefire negotiations while under attack from Israel. This statement comes as hostilities between the two nations have intensified, raising concerns about a broader conflict.

A source familiar with the discussions, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation, revealed that Iranian officials have asserted their position clearly: they will only engage in serious negotiations after responding to what they describe as Israeli preemptive strikes.

The recent Israeli attack, which occurred on a Friday morning, resulted in substantial losses for Iran, including the decimation of a significant portion of its military leadership and damage to key nuclear facilities. Israeli officials have indicated that their military campaign will continue to escalate in the days ahead.

In response to the assault, Iran has vowed to retaliate forcefully, suggesting that this conflict could become the most severe confrontation between the two long-standing adversaries to date. The Iranian government has expressed its determination to retaliate decisively.

Contrary to media reports suggesting that Iran had reached out to Oman and Qatar to facilitate U.S.-brokered ceasefire talks and revive discussions regarding its nuclear program, the official dismissed these claims as inaccurate. Iran's foreign ministry has not provided any comments in response to inquiries regarding the ongoing situation, nor have officials from Qatar or Oman's ministries responded.

Oman has played a crucial mediating role in past nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran. However, the most recent discussions were abruptly canceled shortly after the commencement of Israel's extensive air campaign against Iran. Qatar has also been involved in facilitating talks between the two nations, notably mediating a prisoner exchange agreement in 2023.

Both Oman and Qatar maintain good diplomatic relations with Iran and the United States and have engaged in direct communication with Israel. Their roles as mediators could be pivotal in any future attempts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
