Intense Night Assault on Kharkiv Leaves Damage and Injuries
In a series of overnight strikes, the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine has come under significant attack for the second night in succession. According to local authorities, the assault has resulted in injuries to three individuals, ignited fires in industrial areas, and caused damage to two kindergartens.
The prolonged bombardment targeted Kharkiv's oldest and most populous district, as reported by Mayor Ihor Terekhov. He noted that five industrial facilities belonging to a research and production enterprise suffered damage during the strikes.
Emergency responders were engaged in combating a large fire that spread across an area of approximately 3,900 square meters due to the drone attacks, which also affected 11 residential buildings, Terekhov added.
This wave of violence follows a week after a U.S.-mediated partial ceasefire agreement aimed at curbing strikes on energy and Black Sea infrastructure was announced. Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating this temporary truce.
Ukrainian air force officials reported that they successfully intercepted 57 out of 131 drones deployed by Russia during the attack. Furthermore, 45 drones were rendered ineffective, likely due to countermeasures put in place by Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated over the weekend that Russia had launched more than 1,000 drones in the preceding week and called for stronger support and response measures from the United States and other allied nations. Concurrently, Russia has claimed that Ukrainian drones have targeted its energy facilities.
The ongoing conflict, which began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has seen relentless fighting over the past three years, with both sides maintaining that their operations are focused on military infrastructure rather than civilian targets.
Recent attacks have also had tragic consequences; a drone strike in Kharkiv over the weekend resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 35 others, according to local reports. Oleh Sinehubov, the governor of the Kharkiv region, indicated that the latest series of bombings followed a guided bomb strike in the nearby city of Kupiansk, which left five individuals injured and damaged an apartment complex.
Kupiansk, located east of Kharkiv, was initially captured by Russian forces in the early stages of the invasion but was reclaimed by Ukraine later that same year. The city is now experiencing renewed and intensified military pressure from Russian forces.
As of now, there has been no immediate response from Moscow regarding the recent attacks on Kharkiv.
