Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, internationally recognized for her distinctive raspy voice and major pop hits, has died at the age of 75. Tyler passed away unexpectedly in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness. According to her family, she was undergoing medical care following emergency intestinal surgery in May and was believed to be recovering before her sudden passing.

Tyler's career spanned several decades, with her most iconic song, "Total Eclipse of the Heart," achieving global chart success in 1983. The track, featured on her fifth studio album, became emblematic of the power ballad genre and has retained enduring popularity, especially during astronomical events such as solar and lunar eclipses. The song has surpassed a billion streams worldwide and has been covered by numerous artists across genres and generations.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler was raised in a large family in a coal mining community near Swansea. She was influenced by her early exposure to music, drawing inspiration from artists like Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, and Tina Turner. Tyler began her recording career after being discovered while performing with a soul band under the name Sherene Davis.

Early in her career, Tyler underwent vocal cord surgery which resulted in the signature husky tone that would define her sound. She achieved her first UK chart hit with "Lost in France" in 1977, shortly after adopting the stage name Bonnie Tyler. The following year, she reached the top three in the UK charts with "It's a Heartache," establishing herself as a notable figure in the music industry.

Seeking to evolve her musical style, Tyler collaborated with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman, known for his work with Meat Loaf. This partnership led to the creation of "Total Eclipse of the Heart." The song's dramatic arrangement and emotive lyrics, combined with Tyler's powerful vocals, resulted in four weeks at number one on the US charts and significant international success. The music video, noted for its theatrical and gothic visuals, became a staple of early MTV programming.

Throughout her career, Tyler was nominated for three Grammy Awards and represented the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, performing the song "Believe in Me." She also received recognition from the British monarchy, being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022 for her contributions to music.

While "Total Eclipse of the Heart" remained her most celebrated hit, Tyler continued to release music and collaborate with other artists. Notable works include the soundtrack single "Holding Out For a Hero" from the film "Footloose" and "Here She Comes" from "Metropolis." Her later albums featured duets with artists such as Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, and Francis Rossi. In 2013, Tyler's "Believe in Me" represented the UK at Eurovision, and she continued to perform internationally, including a memorable appearance during a solar eclipse event in 2017 alongside DNCE.

Bonnie Tyler's influence extended beyond her own recordings, as her songs have been frequently covered and featured in popular films and television. Her legacy is marked by a distinctive vocal style, a repertoire of lasting hits, and a significant contribution to popular music over several decades. Tyler is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, a former Olympic judo competitor and property developer.
