Man Fatally Shot on Berlin Street as Gun Violence Rises

A man has been fatally shot on a street in the Berlin neighborhood of Neukölln, highlighting the growing concern over gun violence in the German capital. Police responded to the incident on Sonnenallee around 2:30 a.m. after witnesses reported hearing gunshots, according to a police spokesperson. Upon arrival, officers found the victim severely injured on the sidewalk. Despite efforts to revive him, the man died at the scene.

The suspects in the shooting managed to flee before law enforcement could intervene. Berlin’s homicide division has launched an investigation into the case, treating it as a potential homicide. Reports suggest the shooting occurred in front of a breakfast establishment located at Köllnische Heide on Sonnenallee.

Gun violence incidents have been increasing in Berlin. In August, a man in Charlottenburg was fatally wounded during a dispute that involved multiple individuals, and similarly succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Just a day before that incident, there was a shooting at a restaurant window in Neukölln, and a week earlier, another man was shot in Schöneberg.

According to police data, there has been a notable rise in gun-related incidents in Berlin. In 2025, authorities documented 1,119 cases of gun use, a significant increase of 68% compared to the previous year. In over 500 of these cases, the firearm was actually discharged.

In response to this trend, the Berlin prosecutor's office formed a special investigation group termed "Telum", Latin for "weapon", in February. This unit was created to tackle the growing gun violence in the city. It complements the existing special task force of the state's criminal office known as "Ferrum", Latin for "iron." Established in November 2025, Ferrum was specifically designed to address crimes targeted at Turkish-Kurdish businesses, particularly incidents involving shootings by members of organized crime syndicates allegedly of Turkish-Kurdish origin.

These two investigative groups are collaborating closely to address the surge in gun-related crimes, which has become a significant concern for city officials. The recent increase in such violent incidents has placed Berlin's law enforcement agencies on high alert as they seek to curb the trend and ensure public safety.

The ongoing investigations aim not only to resolve individual cases but also to combat the broader issues relating to organized crime and illegal firearms trafficking, which are believed to be contributing factors in the capital's escalating gun violence.
