Explosive Devices Found Near Power Lines in Germany

Police in the German state of Saxony have discovered nine additional explosive devices near high-voltage power lines close to the Graustein substation near Görlitz. This announcement on Monday by the State Criminal Police Office and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Dresden comes as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of suspected attacks targeting the country’s power infrastructure.

The search for a suspect believed to be involved in these incidents continues, as authorities intensify efforts to prevent disruptions to the electricity supply. Last week, attacks were reported at substations in Jänschwalde, Brandenburg and Bergheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, leading to temporary shutdowns of power plant blocks. While the power supply remained stable and was not endangered, the incidents have prompted heightened vigilance from both police and energy network operators.

In the course of their investigation, officials have found devices suspected to be intended for sabotage, including pyrotechnic projectiles aimed at causing short circuits in high-voltage lines. Launching devices were also discovered in these areas, indicating a coordinated plan to disrupt power distribution.

Last Friday, authorities in Saxony found explosive devices in proximity to the Bärwalde and Graustein substations, following a tip-off that prompted a police response. By Sunday, law enforcement officers had uncovered 21 such devices across Saxony, as they revealed during their latest briefing.

The suspect, a 48-year-old man from North Rhine-Westphalia, remains at large. Public appeals have been issued to help locate him. It is believed that he has admitted to some of the acts in written statements found at the scenes, citing opposition to the use of fossil fuels in energy production as his motive.

Efforts to apprehend the suspect escalated on Sunday when police conducted a large-scale operation using drones near the Hambacher Forest, also in North Rhine-Westphalia. Authorities discovered his motorhome in a parking area on Friday, but the individual was reportedly traveling by bicycle. The Brandenburg police department suggested he might still be mobile but remains undetected as of now.

These series of incidents have led to the launch of an investigation on charges including constitutional sabotage, and in Brandenburg, potentially in connection with forming a terrorist organization. The discoveries have prompted both local and federal investigative efforts to address what some officials describe as coordinated attempts to undermine the stability of Germany's energy infrastructure.
