Pension Levels in Brandenburg Lag Behind National Average

Sun 13th Jul, 2025

Recent statistics reveal that pensioners in Brandenburg receive significantly lower monthly payments compared to the national average, despite having paid into the system for 45 years. Specifically, the average pension in Brandenburg stands at EUR1,557, which is notably less than the national average of EUR1,668 and the neighboring Berlin's average of EUR1,675.

The disparity is especially pronounced between genders in the region. Men in Brandenburg receive an average pension of EUR1,620, while women receive only EUR1,474, illustrating a discrepancy of over EUR146 per month. This gap is even more pronounced on a national level, where women earn more than EUR300 less than their male counterparts.

When comparing the eastern German states, Brandenburg holds the highest average pension for individuals with 45 years of contributions, surpassing other states such as Thüringen, where the average is just EUR1,491 per month. In contrast, western Germany reflects a considerably higher pension system, with Hamburg reporting the highest average at EUR1,787.

Critics, including members of the political opposition, have highlighted the inadequacy of the current pension system. They argue that a national average of EUR1,668 after a lifetime of contributions fails to ensure a dignified standard of living for retirees. Many senior citizens find themselves relying on minimal pensions despite having contributed to the economy for decades. The call for reform in the pension system has become increasingly urgent as the current framework struggles to provide a sustainable living for the aging population.
