Brandenburg Greens Seek New Leadership Following Election Setback

Sat 8th Mar, 2025

The Greens in Brandenburg are preparing for a significant leadership change as they regroup after a disappointing performance in the recent state elections. The party will hold a crucial party congress on March 15 in Potsdam, where delegates will select new leaders to guide the party moving forward.

Following the electoral defeat, the entire state board of the Brandenburg Greens announced their resignation. The party, which has seen its membership grow to approximately 3,700, is now looking to redefine its identity, especially outside of parliamentary influence. In the September election, the Greens received only 4.1% of the vote, a stark decline from their previous performance in 2019, when they had significantly higher support.

Candidates vying for the position of state chair include Andrea Lübcke from Dahme-Spreewald, Linda Weiß from Oberhavel, Dario Hansche from Teltow Fläming, and Clemens Rostock, who previously held the chair from 2014 to 2019. The party is expected to adopt a dual leadership model moving forward.

During their time in government, the Greens formed a coalition with the SPD and CDU, but concerns have been raised about the future of climate policy following the establishment of a new coalition between the SPD and the BSW. This shift has prompted the outgoing state leaders, Hanna Große Holtrup and Alexander Pichl, to pave the way for a new strategic direction, as announced last November.

Notably, Annalena Baerbock, the outgoing Foreign Minister and a prominent figure within the party, is expected to attend the congress but has indicated she does not wish to take on a leadership role in the Greens' parliamentary faction. Similarly, Economy Minister Robert Habeck has also announced his intention to step back from central leadership positions.

The upcoming congress represents a pivotal moment for the Brandenburg Greens as they seek to reestablish their influence and ensure that environmental issues remain at the forefront of political discourse in the region.
