Bluesky Introduces New Verification Process for Users

Fri 23rd May, 2025

Bluesky has announced a new feature allowing users to apply for a blue verification badge on the platform. This initiative, which began in April, enables individuals and organizations to request verification by providing reasons for their application.

The social media platform has integrated a form into its blog post detailing this feature, where applicants must justify their need for the blue checkmark beside their usernames. Additionally, account holders who manage Bluesky accounts can apply to become Trusted Verifiers, potentially granting verification badges to others. Currently, this capability is limited to select accounts, including major US media outlets like The New York Times and Wired.

The rollout aims to streamline the process of recognizing verified accounts, particularly during significant news events. The official Bluesky Safety account expressed enthusiasm about the new verification badges, highlighting their role in distinguishing authentic accounts.

Previously, Bluesky allowed users to verify their accounts through their own domain names, which were incorporated into their account names. Now, the platform is taking a more proactive approach by enabling Bluesky or designated Trusted Verifiers to authenticate accounts and issue blue badges. While any user can confirm the authenticity of an account, only those with verification badges will be recognized in the official app. Alternative applications may accept different verification methods.

This initiative comes in response to the growing concern over impersonation accounts, a problem that became particularly pronounced following Twitter's changes after Elon Musk's acquisition. Bluesky aims to address these challenges by ensuring that users can clearly identify genuine accounts.

As the platform continues to evolve, the introduction of the verification badge system reflects Bluesky's commitment to fostering a trustworthy environment for its users.
