Massive Bicycle Event in Berlin: Key Routes, Timing, and Traffic Disruptions

Sat 31st May, 2025

Berlin is set to host a significant cycling event this Sunday, organized by the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC). The 49th edition of the Bicycle Star Ride will see thousands of cyclists traversing the city and its highways, culminating in a gathering at the Großer Stern in Berlin-Tiergarten before proceeding to the iconic Brandenburg Gate.

With over 20 routes starting from 69 different meeting points and covering a total distance exceeding 2,000 kilometers, the event is expected to draw a substantial number of participants. The festivities will coincide with the Green League's Environmental Festival at the Brandenburg Gate, scheduled from 11 AM to 6 PM.

The theme for this year's event is 'Everyone on the Bike!', welcoming all types of bicycles, including cargo bikes, e-bikes, and rental bicycles. According to an ADFC representative, the event aims to promote cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation.

Traffic restrictions will be in place, particularly on sections of the A100 and A115 highways, where closures will occur from 12 PM to 2:30 PM. Motorists should expect detours and delays, while disruptions are also anticipated for S-Bahn services on lines S1 and S2. Those who wish to join the ride are encouraged to arrive at their designated meeting points at least 15 minutes early. An app called Critical Maps will be available to help participants track the procession and estimated arrival times at various points along the route.

Several of the routes will start from locations in Brandenburg, with the longest route launching as an express ride from Frankfurt (Oder). Additionally, overnight rides will commence from Stettin, Leipzig, and Dessau. Family-friendly routes designed for elementary school children will also be available from Jannowitzbrücke and Heidelberger Platz.

The Berlin police will deploy several hundred officers to manage the event and ensure safety, with plans to reopen affected roads promptly after the cyclists pass.

In addition to the bicycle event, a demonstration organized by far-right groups is scheduled to take place in Berlin on the same day, potentially exacerbating traffic issues. This march is set to begin at Schillingstraße U-Bahn station and will proceed through various streets in the city, prompting counter-protests along the route. A planned rally by a former AfD member has been canceled, citing the current climate as unsuitable for such events.
