Traffic Disruptions in Berlin Amid High-Level State Visit

Mon 12th May, 2025

Berlin is experiencing significant traffic disruptions due to the state visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog. The visit coincides with heightened security measures and will affect several key areas in the city.

Beginning Sunday evening, extensive security barriers have been established primarily in the City West and the government district. The visit commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, with President Herzog being officially welcomed by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue.

Access to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, located on Hardenbergstraße near the Zoo Train Station, is restricted until Tuesday morning. Additionally, large portions of the government district, including areas surrounding Schloss Bellevue, are facing substantial closures on Monday.

Given the heightened risks associated with President Herzog's status as one of the world's most threatened leaders, the police have implemented strict security protocols. Restrictions on vehicular access to the Spree River in the government district are in effect, with additional barriers near the Family Ministry and the Holocaust Memorial 'Gleis 17' at Grunewald Station.

Authorities are advising residents and commuters to avoid these areas where possible. Local residents are encouraged to carry identification, as parking of cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and waste containers is prohibited in the affected zones.

Security measures for the visit reflect the significance of the diplomatic relationship and the ongoing risks associated with high-profile political figures.
