Clean-Up Operations Following Severe Storms: Tegeler and Spandauer Forests Remain Closed for Weeks

Sun 29th Jun, 2025

In the aftermath of recent severe storms, both Tegeler and Spandauer Forests in northwest Berlin will remain closed for an extended period. Thousands of trees have been uprooted in these areas, resulting in significant damage. Authorities have emphasized that entering the forests poses a serious risk to safety.

According to officials from the Berlin Forestry Department, the clean-up efforts are still in their initial stages, with priorities set on clearing roads and residential areas first. Many of the forest paths are currently obstructed by fallen branches, making them hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists.

Officials have issued stern warnings against entering the forests, citing potential dangers from falling tree parts and unstable branches. The forestry teams are working to assess the extent of the destruction and to clear pathways to allow safe access for walking, biking, and horseback riding in the future. Additionally, swimming near the Havel River at the forest's edge is strongly discouraged due to safety concerns.

The severe weather has caused widespread damage across the northern districts of Berlin, with parks and playgrounds in Reinickendorf also being closed as a precautionary measure. The situation has raised questions about the necessity of halting S-Bahn services across the city during the storms.

As meteorological forecasts suggest a trend towards hotter weather for the summer, residents are advised to remain vigilant and heed safety warnings regarding forest access. The long-term impact of these storms on Berlin's green spaces will require ongoing monitoring and management efforts.
