Three-Day Strike in Examination Phase: School Work Stoppage Begins - GEW Defends Action

Tue 13th May, 2025

In a significant move, the Education and Science Union (GEW) has initiated a three-day strike across schools in Berlin, coinciding with the critical examination period. This action has resulted in substantial disruptions, affecting both students and parents as various educational institutions experience partial or complete closures. The strike, which will run from today until Thursday, calls for smaller class sizes and improved working conditions for teachers, educators, social workers, and school psychologists.

The union's leaders, defending the decision to strike, expressed frustration over what they describe as the ongoing neglect from the educational administration regarding the increasing workload faced by educators. They emphasized that the strike is a necessary response to the challenges posed by the current educational environment.

Berlin's Education Senator, Katharina Günther-Wünsch, has publicly condemned the timing of the GEW's strike, expressing disappointment that it occurs during a pivotal time for student assessments. She underscored the additional challenges this creates for schools tasked with managing examinations amidst the disruption.

Critics of the strike, including student representatives, labeled the action as "frustrating," highlighting the adverse impact on students during a vital time in their academic journey. The student body voiced concerns that their needs and anxieties are being overlooked amid the ongoing labor disputes.

In response to the criticism, the GEW reiterated that the real issue lies not in the strike itself but in the educational administration's unwillingness to engage constructively with the concerns raised by educators. They pointed out that teachers have been operating under increasing pressure for years, yet their proposals for improvement have largely gone unacknowledged.

The union leaders noted that the current conditions in schools, exacerbated by recent and planned budget cuts within the education sector, continue to deteriorate. They conveyed their determination to evaluate further actions following this strike, emphasizing that without significant pressure, the administration is unlikely to take meaningful steps towards addressing the issues plaguing the educational system.
