Closure of Two Detention Centers in Berlin Due to Bedbug Infestation

Fri 6th Jun, 2025

The Deutsche Polizeigewerkschaft (DPolG) has announced the closure of two detention centers in Berlin, specifically in the districts of Mitte and Friedrichshain, due to a significant bedbug infestation. The union indicates that the presence of these pests poses a health risk to both police officers and detainees.

The Friedrichshain detention center, located on Wedekindstraße, reported an infestation of mites on November 27, 2024. Despite several interventions by pest control services, bedbugs have been present since April 2 of this year. Consequently, the facility has been closed since June 4, with operations being temporarily transferred to the Nordost detention center in Hohenschönhausen until June 16.

Similarly, the Mitte detention center at Perleberger/Kruppstraße has also been affected and is expected to remain closed until June 9. However, the DPolG has expressed concerns about the timeline for resolving the infestation, citing internal documents that suggest a longer treatment duration may be necessary.

A spokesperson for the police declined to comment on the situation when approached for information. In response to the ongoing issue, the DPolG is advocating for enhanced hygiene standards and the establishment of a mandatory emergency plan across all police facilities to prevent similar situations in the future.

Bedbug infestations have been a persistent problem in Berlin, with various reports highlighting the challenges faced by residents and establishments in dealing with these pests. The union's state chair, Bodo Pfalzgraf, has advised those affected by bites to report them as work-related injuries to ensure coverage for potential follow-up costs through the appropriate authorities.
