Berlin Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of WWII's End

Wed 7th May, 2025

On May 7, 2025, the Berlin Senate and the House of Representatives will hold a solemn event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation from National Socialism. The gathering will take place at the historic Red Town Hall starting at 11:00 AM.

Key speakers for the memorial service include the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, and the President of the Parliament, Cornelia Seibeld. A special guest is expected to attend, Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer, who at 103 years old, will share her experiences through a reading.

The capitulation of the German Wehrmacht marked the official conclusion of the war in Europe on May 8, 1945. This historic moment was sealed in the early hours of that day when military representatives signed the surrender documents before the Allied powers: the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union, at what is now the Museum Berlin-Karlshorst.

To honor this significant event, Berlin has organized a commemorative week that began on May 2 and will continue until May 11. This initiative includes nearly 100 events, such as exhibitions, discussion panels, wreath-laying ceremonies, guided tours, and concerts. Notably, the Day of Liberation from National Socialism, observed on May 8, will be recognized as a public holiday in Berlin for the first time.

These commemorations serve not only to remember the past but also to reflect on the values of peace and democracy that emerged from the ashes of war. The efforts aim to ensure that the lessons learned from history are not forgotten, fostering a commitment to prevent such atrocities from occurring again.
