Icy Conditions in Berlin and Brandenburg Lead to Surge in Accidents on Roads and Walkways

Sat 27th Dec, 2025

Recent freezing temperatures combined with freezing drizzle have created hazardous conditions across Berlin and Brandenburg, significantly increasing the number of accidents on both roads and footpaths. The situation has led to a substantial rise in emergency incidents, with authorities and medical facilities reporting an unusually high volume of injuries and disruptions.

According to local police, over 500 traffic accidents were reported in Berlin from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning--a sharp increase compared to the previous day. The marked uptick in incidents was attributed to the slippery surfaces resulting from sub-zero temperatures and precipitation, with several accidents occurring in quick succession at locations with inclines, such as bridges.

Pedestrians have also faced heightened risks. In areas like Prenzlauer Berg, sidewalks became perilously icy, causing many individuals to proceed with extreme caution. Despite careful movement, some pedestrians suffered falls, and elderly residents were observed using building walls for support during routine activities such as shopping. Emergency services urged residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity and to remain vigilant due to the widespread presence of ice.

Medical facilities across Berlin experienced a pronounced strain. Several hospitals, including Evangelisches Waldkrankenhaus Spandau, Evangelisches Krankenhaus Hubertus, Evangelische Elisabeth Klinik, and Martin Luther Krankenhaus, reported overcapacity in emergency rooms due to the influx of patients suffering from ice-related injuries, primarily bone fractures. The surge in cases also affected operating rooms and intensive care units, bringing them close to critical occupancy. As a result, those with non-life-threatening conditions were advised to consult their general practitioners or use on-call medical services, while urgent emergencies continued to receive immediate care.

Similar conditions were observed in Brandenburg, where police recorded approximately 120 traffic accidents since Friday evening, resulting in 19 injuries. Although the final figures are pending, early data suggests a higher accident rate compared to the same period in the prior year. In Potsdam, the Ernst von Bergmann Hospital addressed a mass casualty event, with emergency teams treating more than 80 injured individuals at one point. The hospital responded by mobilizing additional staff and resources, including surgical and pediatric teams, to manage the influx.

Public transportation was also affected. In Potsdam, bus services were temporarily suspended due to the unsafe road conditions. Authorities called for increased caution among all road users and recommended travelers anticipate delays. Meanwhile, operations at Berlin Brandenburg Airport continued smoothly, thanks to robust winter preparation measures. However, minor flight delays occurred as aircraft required de-icing before departure, with airport officials advising passengers to allow extra time for their journeys.

Looking ahead, weather forecasts indicate that the risk of icy roads and sidewalks will persist. Meteorologists warn that further freezing rain and black ice are possible, especially overnight and into the coming days, as temperatures are expected to drop as low as minus two degrees Celsius. Residents and commuters are encouraged to monitor weather updates and adjust travel plans accordingly to ensure safety during the ongoing period of winter hazards.
